My motivation to develop my own material from living plants is to create space for more greenery, with the aim of making the fashion industry more sustainable. It’s a concept in which materiality can be questioned. An idealistic representation of my future vision in which nature is taken more seriously.

Textile residues are one of the main reasons why we are currently living in a bad environmental space. This relationship causes a lot of criticism in the fashion sector, while not so many effective solutions exist. Every season, fashion trends change, just like nature itself. The only difference is that fashion is replaceable, but nature is not. As an artist, I feel like it’s my responsibility to contribute to a better future. I’d like to indicate that there’s an urgent demand for transformation. Inspired by vertical gardens, I’m conducting research into the development of biodiversity in places where emissions are high, such as in the textile industry. I find the concept of a vertical garden valuable, because in the densely built city where there is no space left for gardens or parks, bare walls are suitable for growing plants. One of the many benefits of vertical gardens is that they reduce traffic emission. I’ve copied the method in which plants are grown vertically and used it on a smaller scale for the design of the dress I made. The dress contains small pockets in every fold that are meant for the seeds. Something that looks like a normal dress in the first weeks, transforms more and more as time goes on. The seeds germinate directly on the dress itself. Growth and transformation are the keywords in my work. My motivation to develop my own material from living plants is to create space for more greenery, with the aim of making the fashion industry more sustainable. It’s a concept in which materiality can be questioned. An idealistic representation of my future vision in which nature is taken more seriously.
